With the longer, warmer, sunnier days of summer almost here, it’s the ideal time to explore our half of the hemisphere with a safe, easy family getaway close to home. Cruises up the East and West Coasts and beyond make the most of the season and our geography with routes and itineraries that explore the best things to see and do this summer this side of the equator, from coast to coast.
East Coast
A big draw on the fall cruising itinerary for its gorgeous fall colors and foliage, the East Coast of Canada and the U.S. is just as remarkable to explore in the welcoming days of summer. The picturesque coastline and charming towns of Atlantic Canada and New England make for a colorful, relaxed journey. Celebrity, Oceania, Norwegian, and Holland America all cruise along the East Coast, stopping in Maine, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Massachusetts, among others. Visit Bar Harbor, Maine, once home to the Rockefellers, Vanderbilts, and Carnegies, and still home to the captivating Acadia National Park. Explore American history in Boston, the capital of Massachusetts, where you’ll also find many leading universities, including Harvard. In Saint John, New Brunswick, stroll the historic waterfront, see the amazing Reversing Falls Rapids and explore the fascinating St. Martin’s Sea Caves and Beach. As you reach Quebec, majestic views abound as you tour Gaspé and the Saguenay River. You might even spot a whale or two.
West Coast
Pacific Coast and Pacific Northwest cruise itineraries run the gamut of West Coast stops, from Victoria and Vancouver, all the way down to Los Angeles, San Diego, and as far as Cabo San Lucas. In Vancouver, visit Stanley Park, the Gastown district, and Granville Island, while Victoria's must-do’s include Butchart Gardens and high tea at the Fairmont Empress hotel. In San Francisco, see the iconic Golden Gate Bridge up-close and stroll through Chinatown and Fisherman’s Wharf. Muir Woods and the wineries of Sonoma and Napa are well worth the detour. Boasting a world-renowned aquarium, Monterey is also made famous as the setting for John Steinbeck’s Cannery Row. Honeymooners love Catalina Island and you will too after catching a glimpse of her romantic harbors. Further south, see why they call Santa Barbara the American Riviera and explore the myriad beach communities of San Diego.
True North
A variety of Alaska cruises tour the West Coast of Canada and the U.S.—with some that include excursions to the interior to see the Canadian Rockies, Banff, and Jasper.
On the East Coast, head up the Atlantic from New York to Reykjavik to discover Iceland’s striking landscapes of lava formations, glaciers, and waterfalls. Greenland’s fjords are a sight to behold and are also home to whales, seals, reindeer, arctic foxes, arctic hares, and ravens.
Meanwhile, a tour of the Northwest Passage can take you to the Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut, cruising the Bering Sea, Arctic Ocean, and the Baffin Bay along the way. No matter which direction you look in, you’re in for some truly incredible views and unforgettable experiences.
